These orphaned Common Mergansers were found alone on a beach in Penetanguishene two weeks ago.
Because mergansers are precocial birds -- those species like ducks and geese whose babies are developed enough to walk around and eat on their own shortly after hatching -- it is unusual to see them on their own.
The vulnerable babies depend on their mother to protect them until they are older, and they normally are close by her at all times.
