To commemorate the end of express passenger service of Great Western Railway's fleet of InterCity 125s/HSTs, a special railtour was organised for these iconic trains. Titled 'The Flying Banana', it started in the early hours at Bristol Temple Meads and ran to London Paddington, via the Great Western Main Line. The next leg saw the tour working to Carmarthen, via Worcester and Hereford. It returned to to capital via Gloucester and Swindon. The final leg of the tour ran from Paddington to Plymouth, via Newbury. Motive power for the tour was provided by 43002 'Sir Kenneth Grange' and 43198 'Driver Brian Cooper & Driver Stan Martin', the first and last of the production Class 43 HST power cars.
The first of three shots sees 43002 leading the tour along the reverse curves at Aston Magna, shortly after leaving Moreton-in-Marsh, on the way to Carmarthen. Having reversed at Swansea on the run back to London, 43002 was once again at the front of the train. The tour is next captured as it snakes its way through the Golden Valley, before climbing into Sapperton Tunnel, with that distinctive rumble at each end, from the MTU engines fitted to the two power cars. With much blasting of horns, our final shot sees 43198 now leading the tour, as it runs along the Berks & Hants Line, winding its way up the climb to Savernake, on the final leg to Plymouth.
While it is not the end for HSTs in general, with many in service with other operators, including ex-GWR stock, and GWR itself retaining a few short sets for use on Cardiff to Taunton and Bristol Parkway to Penzance services, it just won't be the same without them on the front line of GWR express passenger services.
Filmed on a Panasonic VXF990 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.
