After her antics with Braunton on the ACE, 5029 'Nunney Castle' was back out again in the south west, hauling Steam Dreams's 'Cathedrals Express' to Kingswear. Diesel hauled from Clapham Junction, Nunney took over the tour at Westbury, coming off the tour there on the return ready to let the diesel take it back to Clapham Junction. Starting out, we see the Castle running along the sea wall at Sprey Point, near Teignmouth. Not the most ideal location as it turned out, with portacabins and workers in hi-vis still about. The only other spot I had in mind had already been taken, one to try next year when all the works is finished methinks.
After a few servicing shots at Paignton we move on to Newton Abbot, where Nunney gently passes by, having come off the Paignton Branch at Aller Junction. Finally, we have a very brief shot of her speeding through Castle Cary, I say brief because it almost never happened! After sussing out the place a bit, I noticed a shot from the car park looked possible, from the sleeper wall rather than the palisade fencing, both rather tall, but I managed to spot a concrete block to stand on. As my tripod was a little too short to see over the wall properly, I tried to be clever and rest the supports for the legs on the wall, with the legs extended to try and balance it. I could just about manage to keep the tripod still, but no matter what I did, I couldn't get it all level. Both the coming too and going away shots were level, but the centre pan shot wasn't, and vice versa. Peering over the wall I noticed I could actually set the tripod down on the other side (should have done that from the start!) and on checking Real Time Trains, I saw I had a couple of minutes to spare.
This is all where it went horribly wrong, because as I was fiddling about trying to get the tripod level, guess who should come through....oh yes! So I ended up with a shot which began when Nunney was already in frame, was slightly un-level on the coming to and going away shots, and hideously so on the centre pan shot. Oh, and if you're wondering why the sound if muffled, as I brought my tripod over the wall I managed to knock my microphone off down onto the car park side of the wall...and on its side too! And to top it all off, I had to wait for an hour to get a train home, not getting back to Swindon until half 10. My original plan after Newton Abbot was to do Tiverton Parkway and Taunton, but no, I just had to try Castle Cary....could have gotten home an hour earlier too. Still...there's always next time!
After a bit of surgery though, I have managed to make the shot somewhat usable, with all of the shot being completely re-levelled. Not perfect, but at least Nunney doesn't look like she's going down a 1 in 5 gradient now! And at least I actually had something to work with, rather than miss recording it all together. You always get the occasional bad day to level out the good!
If you're wondering how bad the original was, well.... https://twitter.com/Kristian7037/stat...
Filmed on a Panasonic HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.
Enjoy.
